National Board of Examinations (NBE) was established in 1976 on recommendation of a high level expert group. NBE started its operations between 1976 to 1982 as a wing of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS). It was established as an independent autonomous organization on 1st March 1982. The prime objectives of NBE is to elevate the standards of post graduate medical education in modern medicine and conducting examinations of high standard on all India basis.
NBE conducts examinations in 72 disciplines and subspecialties of modern medicine which includes DNB programme in 28 broad and 22 super specialties. NBE has accredited 469 institutions/ hospitals in public and private sector all over the country and has 4500 (approx) post graduate / post doctoral trainees entitled every year. National Board is also conducting Fellowship programme in 17 sub-specialties for MD/MS/DNB Speciality who have completed their training in the concerned specialties.
NBE provides a common national standard for evaluation of minimum level of attainment of the knowledge and competencies of postgraduate and postdoctoral training. Well equipped centers have been identified and accredited by NBE in the concerned specialties to provide excellent training infrastructure and faculty for the candidates.
Diplomate Qualifications awarded by NBE have established benchmarks of high quality in the field of medical education in the country.
